چکیده

[1] Radioisotope evaluation of a cold-core, anticyclonic eddy surveyed in September 2004 on the Chukchi Sea continental slope was used to determine its age since formation over the shelf environment. Because the eddy can be shown to have been generated near the shelf break, initial conditions for several age-dependent tracers could be relatively well constrained. A combination of Ra/Ra, excess Ra, and Th/Ra suggested an age on the order of months. This age is consistent with the presence of elevated concentrations of nutrients, organic carbon, suspended particles, and shelf-derived neritic zooplankton within the eddy compared to ambient offshore water in the Canada Basin but comparable to values measured in the Chukchi shelf and shelfbreak environment. Hence this feature, at the edge of the deep basin, was poised to deliver biogeochemically significant shelf material to the central Arctic Ocean.

Evaluation of shelf–basin interaction in the western Arctic by use of short-lived radium isotopes: The importance of mesoscale processes

Shelf–basin exchange in the western Arctic was evaluated by use of water-column analyses of Ra/ Ra ratios and the first measurements of the short-lived Ra (T1/2 1⁄4 3.64 d) in the Arctic. During the 2002 shelf–basin interaction (SBI) program, excess Ra was detected over the shelf but was not found seaward of the shelf-break. Similarly, the Ra/ Ra ratio dropped rapidly from the shelf across the ...

Comparative characteristics of individual growth of Spicara flexuosa and Spicara maena (Pisces: Centracanthidae) inhabiting the south-western shelf of Crimea, Black Sea

The analyzes of the length and age characteristics and growth peculiarities of two species Spicara  maena and Spicara flexuosa living on the South-Western shelf of Crimea are determined. The existing differences are shown, the issues of the influence of hydrological and climatic factors are discussed, as well as the features of the individual development of these species are noted. Calculations...

Eddy transport of organic carbon and nutrients from the Chukchi Shelf: Impact on the upper halocline of the western Arctic Ocean

[1] In September 2004 a detailed physical and chemical survey was conducted on an anticyclonic, cold-core eddy located seaward of the Chukchi Shelf in the western Arctic Ocean. The eddy had a diameter of 16 km and was centered at a depth of 160 m between the 1000 and 1500 m isobaths over the continental slope. The water in the core of the eddy (total volume of 25 km) was of Pacific origin, and ...

The Western Arctic Shelf–Basin Interactions (SBI) project, volume II: An overview

The Western Arctic Shelf–Basin Interactions (SBI) project is a 10-year Arctic environmental change program. A major field campaign occurred in the spring, summer and fall seasons between 2002 and 2004. The SBI program was developed to investigate the production, transformation and fate of carbon on shelf and slope regions of the Chukchi and Beaufort seas and shelf–basin interactions with the Ar...

Glimpses of Arctic Ocean shelf–basin interaction from submarine- borne radium sampling

Evidence of shelf-water transfer from temperature, salinity, and Ra/Ra sampling from the nuclear submarine USS L. Mendel Rivers SCICEX cruise in October, 2000 demonstrates the heterogeneity of the Arctic Ocean with respect to halocline ventilation. This likely reflects both time-dependent events on the shelves and the variety of dispersal mechanisms within the ocean, including boundary currents...
